Position Title: PSEG Wings to Wonder Summer Program Intern – Teacher Naturalist

Department:   Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary

Site Location:  Bernardsville, NJ 07924

Reports to:        Program Director

Job Classification:  Temporary, Part-Time, Hourly, approximately 20 hours per week (On site)

Start Date (Approximate):  May 2026 End Date (Approximate): August 2026

Job Description:

During this internship, learn to lead nature-focused programs, demonstrations, lessons, and walks while providing support to summer camp program staff. Engage with youth, families, and visitors through hands-on, interactive outreach about environmental topics including birding education, native plants, native wildlife, outdoor exploration, while collaborating with staff to ensure a safe, inclusive, and welcoming experience for all.

Learning Objective: 

Interns will learn about NJ Audubon’s conservation initiatives and programs and be trained to lead a variety of programs serving youth and the public at Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare and conduct nature-based education programs and weekly lessons for scout groups, birthday parties, special interest groups, and summer camps, with a strong focus on connecting children with nature and respect for the natural world.
  • Organize and supervise children, facilitating group management and ensuring safety during all activities.
  • Maintain and set up educational spaces, including classrooms, bulletin boards, and outdoor learning areas.
  • Document programs and activities through photography, video, and social media to highlight camper and program attendee experiences
  • Assume additional responsibilities as requested by supervisors.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Full-time status as a degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate student with at least 24 credit hours earned at an accredited college or university.
  • Passion for teaching environmental concepts to children and families, gardening.
  • Excellent Computer Skills – Microsoft Office, use of social media.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to modify messages for different audiences including children, young adults, parents, and teachers.
  • Excellent organizational, time and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, shift priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to relate to and motivate a diverse range of people, exercise cultural competence and inclusion, and accept direction and constructive feedback.
  • Motivated self-starter able to work independently in the execution of their responsibilities while collaborating with other staff and organizations with the ability to demonstrate initiative and a positive attitude.
  • Strong professionalism and work ethic with the ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.
  • Flexibility to adjust hours to meet deadlines and needs of the organization, including availability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a motor vehicle in NJ.
  • Ability to walk on uneven surfaces as needed for outdoors events and lift up to 25 lbs.

Compensation:  $16.00 per hour, approximately 20 hours per week,
